Conservation of The Endangered
Persian Sunwatcher Lizard: Step 1.

EXPECTED RESULTS
The implementation of the project will
lead to the following results:
1) The DB on the abundance of Persian Sunwatcher
Lizard and local habitat parameters (steepness and exposition of microslopes,
capacity and mechanical composition of the soil, projective covering of
the soil with vegetation as well as household and construction waste,
distance to irrigated areas, highways and areas of working with heavy
technics and, finally, the quantity of sympartic species: Shtraukh's
racerunner (Eremias strauchi) and Pleskei's
racerunner (Eremias pleskei) will be devepoled.
2) The schematic map of optimal, suboptimal and unfit habitats for Persian
Sunwatcher Lizard will be created in GIS and will serve for further assesement
and monitoring of habitat fragmentation within the limits of Goravan ecosystem.
3) The results of the project will be used for basing a management plan
for «Goravan Sands» State Sanctuary and will be presented
to relevant governmental bodies. All this will contribute not only to
the conservation of Persian Sunwatcher Lizard, but also other coexisting
animals and plants.
4) The results of the research will be published as scientific articles
and proceedings at conferences, as well as placed in the web site www.herp-am.narod.ru
5) The present project will be the first one in Transcaucasus concerning
the development of a habitat management plan for small animals, and thus
will contribute to the improvement of nature protection system.
6) Young experts and researchers will be involved in the project research
activities, which will serve them as a good training.
